패들은 보트 측면을 따라 물에 대해 패들 블레이드를 당기거나 밀어서 카누나 카약을 추진하고 조종하는 데 사용됩니다. 앞으로 움직이기 위해 패들러는 칼날을 물에 넣고 샤프트를 뒤쪽으로 당깁니다. 먼저 한쪽을 따라, 다음에는 다른 쪽을 따라 당깁니다.  보트의 방향을 제어하고 조향하는 것은 보트의 한쪽 면을 반복적으로 또는 강하게 패들링하거나 기본 선형 스트로크 패턴을 변경하여 수행됩니다.

패들 샤프트는 모양과 직경이 다양할 수 있습니다. 직경이 1-1.25인치(2.5-3.2cm)인 둥근 단면이 일반적이지만 타원형 모양도 사용됩니다. 일부 디자인은 샤프트 중간 지점의 완전한 원형에서 목 부분의 타원형까지 점점 가늘어집니다. 다른 샤프트는 전체 길이에 걸쳐 타원형입니다. 샤프트 디자인에는 각 스트로크의 힘을 높이기 위해 패들 스로트 근처에 구부러진 부분이 포함될 수 있습니다. 패들러의 손을 보호하고 완충하는 재료는 일반적으로 샤프트의 일부를 덮습니다.
